MEDIA RELEASE: Pacific security community gathers to map polycrisis and path to 2050

Pacific Regional and National Security Conference, 2024

22 June 2024, Suva – Pacific security community representatives will gather in Suva next week for the Pacific Regional and National Security Conference (PRNSC), an important forum to address the region’s pressing security challenges.

The inaugural conference will map the current and future regional security threats and support the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka and Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa will open the event with keynote speeches.

“Prime Minister Rabuka has talked about the polycrisis facing the Blue Pacific, with the multiple challenges of climate change, transnational crime, geopolitics and protecting human security,” said conference organiser, Director of the Pacific Security College, Professor Dave Peebles.

“We wanted to bring together experts from across the Pacific security community to talanoa about this polycrisis, and how we can work together to anticipate.. the decades ahead to 2050.”

On days one and two, policy and subject matter experts will have panel discussions on converging security risks: climate change, transnational crime, geopolitics, and human security. On day 3, diplomats and officials from PIF member countries will practically investigate security risks and explore the critical decisions and responses needed for the safety of future generations.

Presented by the Pacific Security College, in partnership with ten regional organisations and hosted by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, the conference brings together representatives and experts from all members of the Pacific Islands Forum, and beyond.

The Pacific Security College is an educational institution serving members of the Pacific Islands Forum through learning and training, policy engagement and regional collaboration. Established in 2019 at the Australian National University to work in partnership with members of the Pacific Islands Forum, the College supports the implementation of the Boe Declaration through short courses on the priority issues in the Declaration.

The Pacific Regional and National Security Conference will be held at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat from June 24-26.
